Hello, friends and fans,
I recently visited HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, with manager Dona Miller, and we enjoyed chatting backstage with Mr. Maher and one of his guests, two-time Tony Award Winner and 2010 Kennedy Center Honoree, Bill T. Jones (choreographer of one of my favorite Broadway shows, SPRING AWAKENING).
During the program Maher challenged Jones to justify the importance of the arts. Especially in difficult times, the arts come under scrutiny. It's true it's more difficult to make an argument for the importance of the arts when roads need repairing and people need to get back to work.
I believe no matter what's going on in this world, the arts, WHEN THEY'RE GREAT, spark the imagination to creative problem-solving, they inspire us, they define and promote the strength and beauty of our culture and our peoples to the rest of the world, and they reveal to us our staggering POSSIBILITIES.
Never give up your dreams.
Yours...truly,
JLY

| JLY is back
from Boca Raton, Florida, where he was the guest performer
for his new friends Patty and Louis Beck and family at the
Beck Family Campus for Jewish Learning in celebration of Louis's
birthday. JLY met JERSEY BOYS fans Patty and Louis
through JERSEY BOYS producers and friends, John and Bonnie Osher,
who flew in from their boat in the Bahamas to see the show and visit
with JLY and manager, Dona Miller. Louis Beck is President of U.S. Bancorp and Guardian Bancorp as well as CEO of Janus Hotels and Resorts. Patty is the president of Boca Raton's Temple Beth El and the warm, 6-acre Beck Family Campus was built by Patty and Louis as a gift to their community. |
While in Florida, JLY and Dona enjoyed a brief visit with their friends Karen and Dan Swanson. The Swansons are estate builders and philanthropists in West Palm Beach, and Karen and Dan gave JLY and Dona a tour of their newest construction, 1220 South Ocean Boulevard. The night before the Swansons were to be honored for their charity work at West Palm Beach's Mar-a-Lago Estate, the Swansons invited Dona and JLY to be their guests there for a private concert by legendary crooner, Tony Bennett. After dinner, the energetic 85-year-old Bennett sounded great as ever, sharing dozens of his classic songs with the intimate audience.

Osher, Tony-winning producers of Broadway's JERSEY BOYS, THE
PRODUCERS, HAIRSPRAY, and more, in celebration of Bonnie's
birthday. John and Bonnie are enthusiastic and prolific
inventors and
entrepreneurs (and Bonnie has really fun taste in art).
The birthday celebration was held at golf legend Jack Nicklaus's Bears Club in Jupiter, Florida. |

| Two roads
diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as
fair, And both that morning
equally lay I shall be telling this
with a sigh -- Robert Frost |
Tomorrow is...
A NEW DAY

Can't beat New York City for the best of Modern Art. Enjoyed NYC's Museum of Modern Art, today, especially George Maciunas' fascinating "One Year" (1973), left, an assemblage of all the food and toiletry packages he consumed in a year. But the art scene in Los Angeles is catching up. Here's an interesting article from the Wall Street Journal about the L.A. art boom: http://tinyurl.com/27pomky |

Was excited to see
two-time Tony Award winner, Al Pacino, onstage again in
Daniel Sullivan's production of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE,
which is in previews right now at the Broadhurst Theatre
before a November 7th Broadway opening. Last time I saw Pacino
live was in HUGHIE, in 1996, at Circle in the Square
Theatre. Lily Rabe, as "Portia," gives a true
standout performance in this production.
How great to catch a Broadway show on a short trip back to NYC. Tickets and info for the Public Theatre's production of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE at http://merchantonbroadway.com/ |

The First Annual Art Project Los Angeles, a charity auction of art by emerging artist John Lloyd Young, along with works by art icons, Haring, Warhol, Picasso, Miro and more, raised **$235,000** for AIDS Project Los Angeles. This is a staggering amount for a first-ever charity event in a frustratingly strained economy, and the money raised goes directly toward supporting people in the most fundamental ways: providing basic healthcare and even a warm meal. Supporting essential charities in desperate times is difficult, but can *literally* be a matter of life or death for people who are struggling to survive. THANK YOU to all who support AIDS Project Los Angeles in an ongoing way, and especially to those who helped make this first-ever event a resounding SUCCESS. |

...and, speaking of resounding SUCCESS...
TWO THUMBS *WAY* UP to LEA MICHELE and the cast and creators of FOX/TV's hit, Golden Globe-winning comedy, GLEE, on their nineteen 2010 Emmy Award nominations. Good luck!

Several weeks ago, JLY got
back in touch with great guy, songwriter Denny Randell,
when JLY sang two of Denny's songs, "Let's Hang On" and
"Opus 17 (Don't You Worry 'Bout Me)," in a JERSEY BOYS medley
for APLA's annual S.T.A.G.E. benefit (click
here
for video). Randell's songs have sold over 200 million records. Among Randell's other hits are "Can't Get Enough of You Baby," "Workin' My Way Back to You" and "Native New Yorker," among dozens of others for dozens of artists as diverse as The Four Seasons, Lou Christie, Sarah Vaughan, P Diddy, Smash Mouth, Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, Busta Rhymes and more. JLY and manager, Dona, got together in Las Vegas with this successful songwriter and A&R man (see Wikipedia), the week before the Tony Awards. Here's a photo, left. |
